I hear this is adapted from my favorite Test Kitchen but I haven’t seen the original. This is a great version that is better than anything you can find off the shelf.

- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 6 tablespoons sour cream
- 1 tbsp minced shallot (or red onion)
- 1 tbsp minced fresh parsley
- 1 tbsp minced fresh cilantro
- 2 garlic clove, minced
- 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
- Pinch of sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Instructions
- Whisk together all ingredients.
- Check seasoning and add more sugar, salt or pepper if needed.
- Store covered in refrigerator up to 4 days.
Notes
Makes approximately 1½ cups.
I used powdered buttermilk as a substitute to fresh buttermilk.
I have heard (still have to try it but didn't want to forget the tip so I am noting it here) of another alternative for buttermilk substitute, combine 1 cup milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar. Let sit 5 minutes, then use as directed in your recipe.
